The Eccumenical Golf Society
An Ecumenical Golf Outing for Members of Local Churches and their guests.
Ecumenical Golf Society Review 2007
Our first outing of the year took place at Clober Golf Club, Milngavie on Wednesday 4th April. We were very fortunate to play in the middle of a very warm spell and we had glorious weather. Nine
players took part, eight being members of three local churches, plus one guest. It was good to have the new minister from Park Church, Gavin McFadyen, join us. The round of golf was followed by high tea. The overall winner on the day was Bill McKierrnan from St Joseph’s with a very creditable 37 points.
The next outing was on Wednesday 8th August at Helensburgh GC. Again it was a warm, sunny day. Over 20 players took part and there were representatives from six local churches. There were also quite a few guests. After the round, we had high tea and prizes were awarded. The winner of the Brown Trophy for 2007, for members of the Church of Scotland, was Stewart Fraser who, by having a better inward half, beat his son Donald!
The winner of the Ecumenical Cup 2007, for all members of local churches, was Bill McKiernan of St Joseph’s with a clear win of 40 points. This is the first time in the eight years of the competition that a member of St Joseph’s has won and is a personal double for Bill as he had won earlier in the year. Well done Bill!
The final outing of the year was to Balfron GC. There was a good turn out of members of local churches and their guests. It was a breezy day and we all suffered in a heavy shower during the round. Nevertheless, some good scores were returned. The ‘nearest the pin’ was won by Mel Newton. Ann Sills won the ladies’ prize with 28 points. Alistair Paton won the men’s prize with a creditable 43 points. There was a high tea meal at The Wayfairers, Croftamie. Thanks must be given to John Christie who did a lot of organisation for the day.
Well, that is it for another year. It is very pleasant to meet other Christians from the different churches in the town and locality. The outings are open to all members of local churches and their guests. Christian fellowship should be encouraged in all its forms – even on the golf course. Let’s bring them in!“For where two or three come together in My name, there am I with them.”

The Eccumenical Golf Society is open to all members of local churches, gents ladies and juniors. We have members from twelve different churches and meet three times a year, in the spirit of Christian fellowship, to play at local courses and to have a meal afterwards. Non church going guests of members are always welcome and encouraged to join us.
For information regarding outings please keep an eye open in your local church intimations and magazines ( ‘though I do not have all the contact details from local churches!) Where possible there will also be notices at Helensburgh and Cardross Golf Clubs and in the Helensburgh and Lomond Community Advertiser.
